Device status LED

A status LED is a small red light on the device that shows the current operating state. Instead of text or a display, it uses blinking patterns: how long it is on or off, and how often it blinks, tells you whether the device is ready for setup, updating, in use, or needs attention. Where the LED sits depends on the device (e.g. on Mesh Boxes and Remote Controls on the front, on wall switches, ceiling lights and sensors often on the back) – check your device’s description for the exact position. The sections below explain each pattern and when it appears.

Provisioning state

Unprovisioned/Factory settings (Slow Blinking)

With slow blinking (300 ms on, 700 ms off, repeated), the device is in provisioning mode. This means that the device is ready to be added to a new network. The device always goes into provisioning mode automatically after it has been reset. Devices in provisioning mode are displayed by the app when you press the "+ Add" button in the "Devices" tab.

Provisioned (Continuously on)

This is the normal operating mode, which differs from device to device. For some mains-powered devices (e.g. Mesh Boxes), the LED is constantly on when the device has already been successfully added (provisioned) to a network.

Provisioned (Continuously off)

For battery-powered devices (e.g. Remote Control) but also some other devices such as ceiling lights (e.g. Q Four), the LED is constantly off when the device has already been successfully added (provisioned) to a network.

important

This default behaviour of the status LED can be changed for each device in the device settings or via the global network settings of the network.

EasyPairing

Easy Pairing lets you add devices to your network without using the app. The status LED shows different patterns depending on what the device is doing during this process.

Device Search (Very Slow Blinking)

When a device is searching for devices in Easy Pairing mode, its LED blinks very slowly (1500 ms on, 1500 ms off, repeated). That device is the provisioner: it is scanning for unprovisioned devices and actively waiting to receive messages from devices in provisioning mode that are ready to be added to the network.

Device configuration (Increasing Blinking)

While a device is being configured during EasyPairing, the LED blinks in an increasingly fast pattern (700 ms down to 100 ms on/off). The pattern speeds up as the setup progresses and stops when configuration is complete.

EasyPairing Failure (Triple Flash)

A triple flash (150 ms on, 150 ms off, three times) means that EasyPairing has failed for this device. For example, the connection may have been interrupted or the device may have moved out of range. You can try adding the device again.

Kinetic Switch Unpairing

When you unpair a Kinetic Switch (remove the connection to its parent device), the LED blinks in a regular pattern (150 ms on, 350 ms off, repeated) for the duration of the process. This confirms that the device is processing the unpairing request.

Battery-powered devices

On battery-powered devices, the status LED also indicates battery-related states and wake-up.

Five quick blinks (150 ms on, 150 ms off, five times) are a low battery warning. The device is still working but the battery should be replaced or recharged soon so that it continues to respond reliably.

On battery-powered devices the LED blinks once when the device wakes up (e.g. after you press a button or trigger a sensor). This single blink confirms that the device has left sleep mode and has sent out the message successfully.

Attention and Acknowledgement

Attention (Double Blinking)

Double blinking (150 ms on, 150 ms off, 150 ms on, 700 ms off, repeated) appears when the app is configuring the device (e.g. during device configuration or when changing settings). The device is signalling that it is busy and in communication with the app. On battery-powered devices, you may need to wake the device first (e.g. by pressing a button) before this pattern appears. The pattern continues until you leave the configuration screen in the app; then battery-powered devices return to sleep mode.

Acknowledgement (Double Flash)

A double flash (150 ms on, 150 ms off, twice) is a short acknowledgement: the device has registered an action. It often appears when you press the reset button (confirming that the reset was triggered) or when the device acknowledges another command. It is not a continuous pattern; it happens once and then stops.

Running Firmware Update (Fast Blinking)

During a firmware update (OTA), the LED blinks quickly (150 ms on, 150 ms off, repeated). This indicates that the device is receiving and installing the new firmware. Do not switch off or reset the device until the update has finished; the LED will return to its normal pattern (e.g. continuously on or off) when the update is complete.
